But these are not always where the greatest number of people live. The Special Administrative Region Macao came in. When we see a standard map, we focus on the largest countries by area. Monaco led the ranking for countries with the highest population density in 2021, with nearly 25,000 residents per square kilometer. We show in another article how the world looks in this way. To understand how people are distributed across the world, another useful tool is the population cartogram: a geographical presentation of the world where the size of the countries is not drawn according to the distribution of land but according to the distribution of people. Greenland is the least dense, with around 0.1 people per km², followed by Mongolia, Namibia, Australia, and Iceland. Of the larger countries 1, Bangladesh is the most densely populated, with 1,342 people per km². Singapore has 8,430 people per km² that’s more than 200 times as dense as the United States and 2,000 times as Australia. The five most densely populated are Macao, Monaco, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Gibraltar. Many of the world’s small islands or isolated states have large populations for their size. Globally, the average population density is 62 people per km² in 2024, but there are very large differences across countries. The 2020 Census Census Block Map Series, also referred to as the Geographic Unit (GU) block maps, is produced to support the 2020 Census data release. The map shows the number of people per square kilometer (km 2) across countries. It is calculated by dividing the total population of an area by its total land area. Population density is a measure of how densely populated an area is. To understand this, we need to look at population density. But this tells us nothing about where in the world people live. Unless otherwise noted, areas and populations are sourced from the United Nations World Population Prospects, which uses the latest censuses and official figures, as well as figures from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The largest cluster of people on Earth live in East Asia, with about 20 percent of the world’s population residing in that region. Thus constituent countries that are not included on ISO 3166-1, and other entities not on ISO 3166-1 like the European Union, are not included. On any map showing population density, you can see clearly see which regions have many people per unit of land area, and which regions have very few, if any, inhabitants. The list does not include entities not on ISO 3166-1, except for states with limited recognition. ![]() The figures in the table are based on areas including internal bodies of water such as bays, lakes, reservoirs and rivers. The list also includes unrecognized but de facto independent countries. The list includes sovereign states and self-governing dependent territories based upon the ISO standard ISO 3166-1.
